How high did you get it?

When I tell my auto-Muggle friends that I did a track day or autocross, invariably someone asks, “so how fast did you get up to?”

I pause, first caught off-guard by the question, and then not having an answer. I mean... who cares? I guess we just have to edumacate!

For the record, I didn’t clock any speeds in my autocrosses or at the Porsche center, but I did get a top speed right around 80 mph on my Jetta at a small-circuit track day. I’ve gone markedly faster in that car on public roads, that time I tried to catch a Lotus Esprit, so...

160 mph, it’s just low enough that it’s not completely unbelievable.

My Volkswagen will do 180 mph. I can prove it. The speedo goes to 180.

All of it. This could be a true phrase, but can you imagine what a muggle would think?

“Well, I was dialed in around 1:54s but had trouble spinning up the inside everywhere because the diff clutches are worn, so there’s more in it. I tell ya, once I got the high speed bump set it’s like butter on the curbs. With the new Brembos you can really drive it in hard too, trail it to the apex with no fade. With the 292 cam it’ll rev to 8 so I can leave it in 3rd through the kink, so I picked up a couple tenths there.”

“How fast? Like miles an hour? Hell if I know!”

Once had someone almost convinced that stickers add horsepower but another friend ruined it.

Yeah. The general public thinks the point of a performance car is speed, or driving fast turning left.

Try building a Formula SAE car... people want to know how fast it will go, and top speed is so far removed from the purpose of the car. Heck, I was the drivetrain guy on our car, which meant the top speed was essentially up to the sprockets that I had made. But our adviser didn’t believe there was any point in having it geared to go faster than we would need at competition. This meant about 60mph at 7000rpm in 5th gear. “We have a pneumatic shifter, so shift times are essentially zero and we should make use of all our gearing advantage by gearing it short.”

We also had a great, broad turbocharged torque curve... I would have been much happier with 60mph as the top of 3rd, and running the course in mostly 3rd, instead of ever shifting and needing 3-4-5. And one last whining bit that’s not entirely related to the muggles that prompted your post. We had a slipping clutch issue at competition, so I was bouncing off the rev limiter in top gear at well under 60mph. Taller gearing could have helped that at least a little.
